Welcome to the Mind and Personality Surveys!
What is a mind? Does a dog have a mind? Does a baby? A robot?
People often disagree about these things. Some may
think that their pets have personalities just like humans. Some insist
that robots might well have feelings. And yet others may feel that
no one but a conscious, intelligent, feeling human can have a mind. But no
one really knows the
answers to such deep questions.
That’s why we’re asking you. This Mind
Survey attempts to uncover
the fundamental ways in which people perceive minds differently. To do this,
we are asking for a lot of help from many people. We hope you will
join this project by devoting about an hour of your time (yes, we know that’s
a lot to ask) to the Mind Survey. We ask you for
a serious commitment of your thought and energy, in the hope that we can
learn how people answer deep questions about minds for themselves.
The survey begins with questions about your perceptions
of minds. Then, we will ask more about yourself—about your emotions,
your personality, and your beliefs. All of the answers we collect are anonymous,
of course. If you are joining the survey
from the Harvard Study Pool, please enter your SONA ID on the next page
so you can be awarded credit. Your answers will still be treated in strict
confidence (if you aren’t
affiliated with Harvard, there’s no need to include an ID—just
enter any number from 0 to 99999999).
There are many questions here--it can take as much as an hour to
complete the survey. Your answers will be most useful to us if
you complete the entire survey. Most people find the questions interesting,
but answering all of them could be tiring. If you start, you will not be
able to go away and pick up later without disrupting the survey program,
so please be prepared to complete all of the survey once you start. After
the last page of questions, there will be an explanation of
the study and links to related research if you’d
like to find out more.
Once you begin, you are free to quit the survey at any
time, although again, your answers will be useful to us mainly if you complete
the whole survey. If you are taking the survey for class credit, the credit
will be awarded for the amount you complete--this means you will not be awarded
full credit unless you complete the full survey. No personally identifying
information will be collected. If you agree to proceed, please click on the
appropriate link below.
